For referring providers

If you are a pediatrician, general practitioner, therapist, psychiatrist, gastroenterologist, endocrinologist, OB/GYN, or other specialist sending someone to nutrition care, this page is for you. The process is simple yet thorough and the path is the one you already use: reach Rebecca directly.

Referrals

Most people who find us are sent by someone they trust

Appleman Nutrition is a private-pay practice of registered dietitians. We work closely with each client’s treatment team. We believe our best work happens when we consider the perspectives and assessments of all members of our clients’ treatment teams, so we make a point to prioritize conversations to that end.

Most people who find us are sent by someone they already trust. That is the actual heart of how this practice works, not a side door.

How to refer

How to refer someone

Most referrals come directly to Rebecca Appleman, RD, the Practice Founder and Executive Director. Rebecca speaks in detail with you or directly with the client you are referring, and matches them with the best dietitian on our team to meet their needs. You do not need a special form, a fax number, or an EHR connection to send someone our way.

Referrals do not require a formal diagnosis or elaborate clinical summary. Simply let us know who you are, who you are sending, and what you are hoping we can help with, and we will take it from there.

Reach Rebecca

If it is easier for the person you are referring to initiate the conversation themselves, they can schedule a free discovery call. That call is completely complimentary and our way of ensuring that care begins on the right foot. After they reach out, Rebecca coordinates next steps including, if indicated, scheduling a full initial nutrition consultation. Complimentary discovery calls are not clinical sessions, and they do not obligate anyone to schedule a full consultation.

Scope

What to send people for

Since our inception in 2008, we have committed to excellence in the treatment of eating disorders and disordered eating presentations of all kinds. While this clinical focus remains paramount, we have used this foundational lens of inclusive eating, mindfulness and empirically backed nutrition science to treat a wider scope of nutritional priorities including prenatal and postpartum care, gastrointestinal health, perimenopause and menopause and metabolic optimization.

We work from a simple conviction: all foods fit, and every human body has value. It is the relationship with food and the ability and skills to make wise food choices that we help people change; the work is never about a list of foods to avoid.

While the treatment of eating disorders, disordered eating and weight concerns were the initial focus of the practice, we also care for many people with the following concerns:

  • Pediatric, adolescent and family based nutrition therapy

Feeding struggles, growing bodies, and family meals, including work with parents, not only with the child.

  • Weight Management & GLP-1 Support

Scientifically grounded guidance for metabolic optimization and a centered mindset around food. For those using a GLP-1 medication, or considering one, we provide nutrition care alongside the medication their prescriber manages.

We do not sell supplements or other products. Care here is defined by the work we do together, not about filling up a shopping cart.

Reach Rebecca

Call Rebecca at 917.885.4624 to discuss a referral, or ask your patient to request a discovery call. Please do not send patient health details by text or email.

2

Client Connection with Rebecca & Scheduling

Your client and Rebecca will discuss their nutrition priorities and in collaboration with you, we will determine the dietitian on our team best suited to guide your client in meeting their needs.

3

Begin Care

Your client will have their full Nutrition Consultation, virtually or in person. Obtaining the client’s consent, we will reach out to you to share our detailed assessment and begin collaboration regarding their care.

How payment works

We are a private-pay practice and our clients are billed monthly via credit card for all services provided during the course of a month. We do not bill insurance or submit claims. If a client’s plan has out-of-network nutrition benefits, we provide a detailed receipt (superbill) with the diagnostic and procedure coding that the client can submit to their carrier individually to seek reimbursement.

Fees are discussed on the discovery call.

Where we see people

We see clients by telehealth and in our private office in Rye, New York. Ask Rebecca whether we can see someone in their state.

Clinical backing

Who you are sending clients to

Appleman Nutrition is founded and directed by Rebecca Appleman, RD. Nutrition was her second career. She trained in New York City, worked as the primary dietitian alongside talented therapists in eating-disorder day treatment and intensive outpatient programs, spent years providing outpatient nutrition counseling to eating disordered clients, then established her private practice, and co-founded Columbus Park Collaborative (now Columbus Park), an eating disorder treatment center in New York City along the way.

You are sending your clients to registered dietitians, with a highly curated skill set, not to a “treats everything” mill. Our practice uses a tiered system of supervision, so we are pooling our expertise and experience for each client and care is never one person improvising alone.

Our clinicians are introduced on our team page, which details each dietitian’s clinical focus.
