Susanna Brass is a Recovery Coach who provides essential hands-on support for individuals navigating eating disorder recovery, bridging the gap between clinical nutrition counseling and the daily realities of nourishing oneself.
Since joining Appleman Nutrition in 2025, she has brought her unique blend of athletic mentorship experience, psychological insight, and trauma-informed care training to her work supporting clients through meal and snack sessions. Susanna's approach is deeply collaborative, working alongside nutritionists to provide real-time guidance, encouragement, and skill-building that helps clients develop confidence in their ability to nourish themselves independently.
Her role encompasses one-on-one meal support where she models appropriate eating behaviors, provides gentle redirection when needed, and offers steady encouragement during vulnerable moments. Susanna makes herself available at all hours for pre-meal support, virtual meal sessions, and the kind of responsive coaching that helps clients navigate challenging moments as they arise. Her background as a Division I tennis player at the University of Texas at Austin has given her exceptional skills in performance coaching, creating pre- and post-meal routines, and helping clients develop coping strategies for anxiety-provoking situations.
With a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, an Educational Psychology minor, a Forensic Science certificate, and trauma-informed care certification with honors from the Center for Digital Studies, Susanna brings both academic knowledge and practical expertise to her recovery coaching work. Her experience as a recovery coach at Monte Nido and as a Certified Nursing Assistant caring for her grandmother has equipped her with the clinical observation skills and compassionate presence needed to support clients through both the physical and emotional aspects of recovery. Currently pursuing her Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree at either Columbia or UPenn, Susanna is committed to deepening her expertise in mental health care.
Outside her clinical work, Susanna embodies the joyful relationship with food and movement that she helps her clients discover. She loves baking and experimenting with new recipes, creating flower arrangements for loved ones, playing tennis, and exploring diverse cuisines at restaurants throughout the city. Her belief that food connects us to culture, community, and joy informs her recovery work, helping clients rediscover the pleasure and meaning that food can bring when freed from the constraints of disordered eating.
Susanna's Division I athletic background gives her unique insight into supporting athletes and active individuals in recovery, understanding the specific challenges they face around performance, nutrition, and body image.
Her trauma-informed care training and psychology education allow her to provide sensitive, psychologically attuned support that honors each client's emotional experience during the vulnerable process of changing eating behaviors.
Susanna's availability and flexibility—offering support at all hours and in various settings including homes and schools—provides the kind of responsive, real-world assistance that makes recovery sustainable beyond the therapy office.
